Colored Gold Alloys
The alloys of gold with copper have a reddish tinge; those of gold with silver are whiter, and an alloy of gold, silver, and copper together is distinguished by a greenish tone. Manufacturers of gold ware make use of these different colors, one piece being frequently composed of several pieces of varying color. Below are given some of these alloys, with their colors:

The finished gold ware, before being put upon the market, is subjected to a special treatment, consisting either in the simple pickling or in the so-called coloring, which operation is conducted especially with alloys of low degree of fineness, the object being to give the layers a superficial layer of pure gold.
The presence of silver considerably modifies the color of gold, and the jeweler makes use of this property to obtain alloys of various shades. The following proportions are to be observed, viz.:

Gold also forms with aluminum a series of alloys of greatly varying coloration, the most curious of them, composed of 22 parts of aluminum for 88 parts of gold, possessing a pretty purple shade. But all these alloys, of a highly crystalline base, are very brittle and cannot be worked, for which reason their handsome colorings have not yet been capable of being utilized.

L'Oreficeria; La Orfebreria
The jewelry is the art of working precious metals, often in conjunction with stones or enamel in order to obtain jewelry and objects for people or the furnishing of public, private or ecclesiastical.
The metals most commonly used are gold, silver, platinum, copper, iron, and many alloys, such as electrum (gold and silver), bronze, brass, pewter, and others. The metals can be shaped or decorated, both hot and cold.
The techniques of decoration of surfaces most widespread are the overhang, namely the creation of images in relief on one face of the metal plate via indentations of the opposite face, by hammer and chisel (a sharp instrument that creates furrows by bending the lamina without removing material; is also used to refine the visible part of the lamina); the incision, i.e. a cut more or less deep obtained with the burin (unlike the chisel, the burin track grooves removing the metal); the hammering, operation performed by hitting with a hammer a metal surface, punching, consisting of impressing the surface of the object is decorated with punch (metal rod on the tip of which is carved the pattern to be reproduced), and the labeling, a technique similar to punching built on areas larger .
The watermark, i.e. the application of precious metal fine wires of gold and silver smooth or twisted welded contact points, and granulation (affixing of microscopic beads of precious metals thickly touching) are techniques that have always been widespread.
Finally, consideration should be given to plating (gold, silver, chrome, etc..), Or the lining of a metal poor with a precious metal.
The modeling of a metal can be done either via the metal processing industry that made malleable by casting, which in turn may be in the mold (when the molten metal is cast into a matrix, generally bivalves, clay, sandstone or cuttlebone, which bears a negative impression of the desired shape) or lost wax (see encyclopedia entry "fusion (bronze)") or finally with a combination of the two techniques.
Special color effects are obtained by working together more metals. The main techniques are the inlay (a technique of oriental origin in which thin threads of precious metal are inserted into the grooves obtained with cold chisel or chisel engraving on a metal poor), niello (insertion of an amalgam of molten silver, copper, lead and sulfur in the furrows of an incision on a surface of gold or silver, to achieve effects such contrasting inlay) and damascene (the process used for the decoration of arms is a variety in which surface of inlay the incision is at regular intervals).
Also significant is the metal working jointly with precious and semiprecious stones, glass or enamel.
As regards the glazes, the main techniques are the cloisonné and champlevé. The technique known as cloisonné, characteristic Byzantine jewelry from the sixth century AD, is the insertion of glass pastes of different colors within cells (alveoli) obtained by welding thin metal strips (cloisonné) perpendicular to the blade support. The whole was then melted at low temperatures so as to bind the various materials. In particular, in the Carolingian period this technique was often coupled to the insertion of stones or-blown glass cabochon (i.e. in the form convex semi-ovoid). The technique champlevé (or alveoli hollowed) consists instead in the machining of a metal sheet of considerable thickness, in order to obtain inside the grooves in which to arrange the glass pastes. Very important was also the translucent enamel involves the preparation of a transparent glass paste on a metal plate engraved or sculptured in low relief, which therefore remains visible. Finally, the technique of plique à jour; Plique-à-jour (French for "letting in daylight") is a vitreous enameling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel combines the enamel translucent to cloisonné: the glass paste is melted within the contour of metal strips fixed with an adhesive to the sheet of support that was subsequently eliminated.

Flame to melt metal smelting or Micro melting
Type of flame for melting metal casting or micro fusion
The NEUTRAL FLAME is obtained when there is enough
Oxygen to remove the yellow portion of the flame.
REDUCING FLAME is obtained when partially closed oxygen valve until a yellow section in the flame.

The Flame Neutral or Reducing Flame.
Type of flame to melt metals
In casting or micro fusion
The correct setting of the flame when it melts the metals gold and silver is important in preventing the oxidation.
The best type of flame to melt metals is the REDUCING Flame which requires the least amount of air or oxygen. This type of flame is not as powerful as the Oxidizer Flame, however gives better results in the metal. All the air or oxygen content in the mixture of gases is consumed so that there is no possibility that this is combined with molten metal, thereby avoiding the formation of new oxide and reducing the oxides previously formed step in the metal.
In the molten metal can observe the presence of an oxidation cream on the surface indicating the presence of a Flame Oxidizer when leading light blue area of the flame on the metal. However, when the flame is removed from the molten metal at a distance where its zone light blue, yellow and blue in contact with metal, then the flame becomes LIPO. The metal becomes more clear and bright as a mirror. If the flame further away and came into contact with the metal part of the blue that looks like a wide brush, cream returns to the surface oxidation of the metal.
Therefore, the first blue cone coming from the mouth of the torch should not go to the metal, as this flame has a mixture of both gas and oxygen or air without complete combustion and therefore is not very hot. The second cone immediately after the first appearance blue and yellow is the reducing zone which should lead to the metal to melt and kept at about 3 cm away from the metal. The next cone is light blue and very large size, is a zone of oxidation.
Reduction zone of the flame is the one should always keep in contact with the metal to melt both the silver and gold.
REDUCING A flame is easy to obtain and observe when a torch opens first gas and then let out oxygen so slowly until the yellow flame just disappears.
